January is all about getting back to business. We know this might not be anyone’s favourite time of the year, because we would all rather be getting back to vacation. Still, a new year holds a lot of possibilities. New growth possibilities in both your personal and professional life is up for grabs in a new year. It’s up to you to take those opportunities and run with them!

When we start a new year at work, we always promise ourselves that this year we will be more organised and do away with unnecessary clutter. And usually we can keep it up for a month or so, but come the end of February, we are usually just back to old, bad habits. We have a few tips for you on how to organise your desk so that it is both functional and looks great!


1.Floating shelves

Floating shelves are a great way to organise all your office supplies, without taking up too much space on your desk. From books to stationery and even decor pieces, a floating shelf has room for everything.

2.Keep the desk clean

Working in a clean space is essential when it comes to being productive and creative. Clutter is a no-go and that is why it is important to always keep your desk clean and tidy.

Using shelves, peg boards and utilising the space under your desk, can help you to keep the space neat and organised. A notebook and your computer should be some of the only items that take space on your desk. Afterall, who doesn’t want to work in a beautiful space?

3.Turn supplies into decor

Making things look nice is something we all want. No one wants to work or live or sleep in a space that is not looking good. The problem with decor is that it tends to take up space and when you have limited working space available, that is not ideal. 

A great solution is to turn your supplies into decor. Using the wall space in front of your desk, you can arrange stationery according to colour and take your decor up a notch in a functional way.

A pegboard works wonders when it comes to organising your supplies in a sensible but aesthetical manner.You can add wire baskets and trays and you’ll find yourself mastering the skill of organisation. 

4.Effective storage solutions

When it comes to storage, thinking smart is the way to go. Do not only think of office supplies, because items you can find in both the kitchen and the bathroom section can work wonderfully as storage solutions. A great example of this is a cutlery tray, that can serve as a great drawer organiser for your stationery.

A rolling cart is also a good storage option. It’s easy to move, has a lot of storage space and can fit into small spaces next to or under your desk. Thinking creatively when it comes to storage is key and before you realise it, you will have opened up a new world of space for yourself!

5.One in, one out

This is a rule that we should apply to every aspect of our homes and not only our office space. It helps to prevent us hoarding a bunch of unnecessary items and keeping our homes and offices clean and tidy. The rule is simple! For every item to add to your office space, one other item has to go. If your office storage space is at maximum capacity, but we keep wanting to add new items, an overflow of things you don’t need will soon become a problem.

Ask yourself when was the last time you used a certain item and if you can see yourself using it in the near future. If the answer is no, it’s time for that item to go. This way you can get rid of items you do not need or use and make space for something that will come in handy. 

6.Reuse and Recycle

Being environmentally friendly is the topic of the day, no matter where you find yourself. Reuse and Recycle should be part of every aspect of our lives. You may be wondering, how you can use this principle when it comes to decorating your office. Look no further than your kitchen.

Your old coffee pods or silicone cupcake holders are great storage containers for small items like paper clips and binder clips. They look cute and will help you do your bit for the environment.
